Six Years With the Texas Rangers 18751881 James B Gillett Books
Story was short, OR I read it very fast because it was a very good book.I was born in Big Springs West Texas, Howard County in 1955. The oldest picture of myself was taken in black and white film on a box camera. The picture of me was when I was two years old, sitting on a black eighteen hand beautiful Morgan stallion. I was naked except for a cloth diaper a and a straw cowboy hat that had been stepped on by many cows HORSES and boots. The bridle was grounded and there was not another human in the picture. I grew up on the stories of the Texas Rangers. I always wanted to be a Ranger. However, I joined the USMC at seventeen because it was my duty as I could not stand the evening news covering the Vietnam war. I'm SIXTY-ONE and I still wish I had been a Ranger. I did serve thirty years in law enforcement. Loved the book. I remember every river and mountain range mentioned in the book as well as the towns. If you are a Texan, then you're proud of the Rangers. That's the straight of this story.

Six Years With the Texas Rangers 18751881 James B Gillett Books Reviews
This was a fascinating book by a real life "bad-a**" whose life was like a western movie shooting, arresting killers, kidnapping, chasing fugitives, horses, guns, and living off the land with the hard men of his crew. It takes place back when Texas, New Mexico and Mexico were wild and barely settled in many areas. As a warning though, like many people of his era, he does not think highly of the Natives, and some of his statement could be considered offensive. He was a product of his time. The book was interesting and exciting.
As a history buff, I found the book to be very interesting and as an avid reader of western novels, I found there to be plenty of action and adventure.
I recommend the book to anyone who enjoys either of those genres.
I started this with skepticism “See how brave we were?” (See below) Yeah, there was some of that, but bearable.
Mostly, this is Jim Gillette’s saga from the early, post-Civil War days in Texas, into the turn of the still-wild Century, the late Nineteenth. Gun-slinging, Winchester-toting, riding hard in the saddle Western adventure!
As a native Coloradan, I’ve got the inborn skepticism for anything Texas. But, I’m loathe to admit, Six Years With The Texas Rangers is a corker! I recommend it, unreservedly!
This is the book that will give you a view of what it was like in the early days of the Republic of Texas for law enforcement against outlaws, indians, and renegades. Life was tough in general to even exist from day to day. Jim Gillett joined the Rangers at a very early age when most youngsters would be in school today. Way before autos and such, they traveled by horseback and survived by steel nerves, true grit, and fantastic courage.
Another good book to read about the Texas Rangers was written by Mike Cox formerly with The Texas Department of Public Safety It's title is "Texas Ranger Tales, Stories that need telling.
This is a good story. Historical account of a time gone by. If you have a teen interested in the past and adventure I highly recommend
this story. Some might take exception to the non PC ideas and references, but this allows discussion time with you. A time when men where men.
911 did not exist and it was easy to die. Not gruesome or harsh just his career factually related by the writer. An easy read, no pictures.
Gillett told it the way it was. If you are a history buff and are interested in the period in this country after the civil war when in some parts of this country there was very little law and order then this book is for you. I thought it was very well written considering that Gillett left school at an early age. I found the book interesting and informative. I'm glad the Texas Rangers were around back then to keep law and order.
Shootout in Cheyenne Exciting Western Tale of Love and Revenge
Jim Gillett wrote a fascinating book about his years with the Texas Rangers. I was in the saddle with him, getting a clear view of every adventure. I do not know if he single handedly wrote this book, but for a boy who dropped out of school early on and went to work, he certainly wrote it very well and somewhere, somehow, he learned to put his thoughts down on paper and made a wonderful biography about Rangering and catching bad guys, and the Tribes which at that time were on the war path in New Mexico, Texas and across into Mexico. The Mexicans were a hardy bunch of outlaws and also gave the Rangers a run for their money. Gave this one five stars!
